Hyperion BI+ - Version: 11.1.2.0.00 and later [Release: 11.1 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.
Symptoms

When using Oracle EPM 11.1.2, the system crashes if you use Remote Desktop Connection to sign into the server running the Foundation/Framework/Oracle HTTP server and log off from the server. Issue happens ONLY when logging off from the server using the account which installed EPM services. There are no issues when logging off from the server using different account.

After logging off from the server, even without doing anything in the server, cannot run any jobs inside the workspace. Running the jobs will throw "Error loading ADF" warning. So if try to log off from the workspace browser and login back, cannot sign in again to the workspace and receive the error "Error 404--Not Found". No new connections will work. Have to restart all the services to make it work again.

Same issue exists for Shared Services also, giving "Error 404--Not Found" while logging.
Cause

If the user who installed EPM System products, signs into a remote session of EPM System and then logs out of the remote session, sometimes OS cleans out the temp files associated with this user. Since these temp files are in use by WebLogic, deleting them causes WebLogic to stop functioning.

Solution

Check the registry for the value of -Dweblogic.j2ee.application.tmpDir for both Workspace and SharedServices. This is in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Hyperion Solutions > FoundationServices0 > Hys9FoundationServices

Once the location is found, check if the files in this directory are being deleted when you remote into the machine and then log off as an account that installed the application. If this is the case, please change the location of tmpDir.

Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit) - Version: 2008 R2
The compression/decompression utility should be capable of handling long file paths (a free utility which fulfills this requirement may be downloaded from http://www.7-zip.org)

Database clients (in a preferred 64-bit environment) should be installed in the order of 32-bit then 64-bit. Products which require 32-bit clients include Interactive Reporting and Financial Data Quality Management.
Goal

Many applications can be installed in EPM 11.1.2.0 and EPM 11.1.2.1 environments. These require careful preparation to prevent installation and configuration failures. This article makes some best practice recommendations that will allow a new installation to be robust. The EPM 11.1.2.0 release did not offer upgrade or migration features, so many customers are expected to move up to and take advantage of the new features of EPM 11.1.2.1. In most cases customers who have production environments containing earlier versions of the Hyperion System 9 or Oracle EPM 11 families will need to and want to move to higher specification environments to meet the certification requirements of the environment of this set of products.
Solution

(1) GREENFIELD/CLEAN INSTALL
It is recommended to start with a clean install. An attempt to install on top of a pre-existing Hyperion System 9.2.1, 9.3.3, or 11.1.1.3 installation would likely lead to the loss of essential data and configuration files needed for moving to 11.1.2.1 while simultaneously disabling the prior version.

(2) MICROSOFT WINDOWS VERSION
Earlier versions of Hyperion System 9 and Oracle Hyperion EPM 11.1.1.x were not certified against currently supported operating systems and databases so it is unlikely that they were installed in environments certified to work with EPM 11.1.2.1.

Since many of the applications of EPM 11.1.2.1 are 64-bit savvy and could benefit from the optimization features of Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 64-bit...that would be recommended.

(3) COMPRESSION/DECOMPRESSION
As mentioned above, ensure that your compression/decompression utility will handle long file path names (greater than the 260 character Microsoft Windows path limitation).

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247%28VS.85%29.aspx#maxpath

(4) TURN OFF MICROSOFT'S USER ACCOUNT CONTROL
UAC (Microsoft User Account Control) is a feature of Microsoft Vista and Windows 2008.

When the hyperlink is clicked, the next window should NOT have a check box checked.

The screen layout for Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 is:

(5) ENSURE MEMORY AND CPU NUMBERS ARE ADEQUATE
If all Hyperion products that can be accessed via Oracle EPM Foundation 11.1.2.x were installed and activated it could easily require around 14 gigabytes or more of RAM. This pretty much eliminates consideration of a 32-bit install (where each machine can access at best 4 gigabytes of memory...and no less than 1 gigabyte of that would be for the operating system). The processing load for many separate Java virtual machines would also make it practical to have four or more CPUs. The memory and CPU requirements might be reduced somewhat if fewer applications or JVMs were run, but it would not be advisable to run even a test and development install with fewer than two CPUs and 8 gigabytes of RAM as there are around two dozen processes to support. Technical support is not equipped to estimate the actual production capacity of an environment...there are too many variables involved. It would be best to ramp up the system with actual processes and loads and project from that.

(6) PREPARING DATABASE CLIENTS
The following applications require the installation of a full Oracle database client on the machines where they will be installed.

Performance Management Architect Dimension server
Financial Management application server
FDM Application Server and any machine that has FDM Workbench
Strategic Finance
If an Oracle database is used, a full database client with Oracle Call Interface (Oracle 11.1.0.6 or later) must be installed. Ensure a Net Service Name/tnsnames.ora is configured for remote databases.

(7) PREPARING DATABASE REPOSITORIES
A number of different relational database repositories must be prepared if their matching applications will be configured, preferably with different schema owners. Ideally the database will be on a separate stand alone server behind a firewall.
CalcManager
DisclosureManagement
EnterprisePerformanceManagementArchitect
ERPIntegrator
Essbase
FDM
FinancialClose
FinancialManagement
PerformanceScorecard
PlanningApplication
PlanningSystem
ProfitabilityAndCostManagement
ReportingAndAnalysis
SharedServices
ORACLE DATABASE REPOSITORY:
Server versions supported include: Oracle 10.2.0.4+, 11.1.0.7+, or 11.2.0.1+
HFM, HSS, and/or EPMA instances require at least 1GB of RAM and Automatic Memory Management.
The database encoding should preferably be AL32UTF8 (UTF8 is fallback option) and NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS should be in order ',.' (confirm by running: SELECT * FROM NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS;)
Each EPM user must have the RESOURCE role and the CREATE SESSION and
CREATE VIEW privileges.

Note that Oracle recommends a separate Oracle database instance and other specific adjustments to work with FDM.

Oracle Data Provider (ODP) for .NET 2.0 (from the Oracle Data Access Component (ODAC) package) is required and must be installed by a user with Windows administrator rights for the following products: FDM or Performance Management Architect Dimension Server.

MICROSOFT SQL SERVER DATABASE REPOSITORY
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 is certified.
Run the following two commands against each database used by EPM:
alter database set READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON
alter database set ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION ON

IBM DB2 DATABASE REPOSITORY
IBM DB2 9.7 FP3a+ is certified.
(8) MICROSOFT INTERNET INFORMATION SERVER
For Microsoft Windows 2008 servers, ensure that IIS 7 is installed with IIS 6 compatibility features (needed for HFM). Ensure that ASP.NET has been installed as well. In Windows 2008: Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Server Manager (or use icon in tool-bar) > Roles Summary > click Add Roles > ...complete verifications... > On Select Server Roles screen select Web Server (IIS) > et cetera.
(9) PREPARE A DOMAIN USER FOR INSTALL
The Microsoft Windows Services control panel should have a domain user with rights to start a service as the owner of each Oracle EPM service, so that user should be determined before installation.
(10) CONFIGURE INTERNET EXPLORER 8 (if not using Firefox)
Internet Options > Security Settings tab > Custom level...
Allow script-initiated windows without size or position constraints (Enable)
Allow websites to open windows without address or status bar (Enable)

Internet Options > Security tab > Enable Protected Mode (Uncheck)

If multiple open windows are needed: http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID9391075
(11) INSTALL A 32-BIT GNU (7.06) or AFPL (8.5.4 or 8.51or 8.14 ) GHOSTSCRIPT OR ADOBE ACROBAT DISTILLER (6.0 or 8.0)
This is needed for Oracle Hyperion Financial Report PDF output.

Enhanced display of charts (via Adobe SVG Viewer) is only possible when using Adobe Acrobat Distiller.
(12) ENSURE THERE ARE NO SPACES IN THE INSTALL PATH

Symptoms

When attempting to login to an Oracle FDM Application the following error is returned:

Error: An Error occurred logging onto the system. -Unable to connect to database. Please check the database information and verify database is accessible".
Cause

Currently the oracle 32 bit client is installed on the FDM application server and the 32 bit Oracle Provider for OLE DB is able to connect to the Oracle Database with "Test Connection". The issue is that the TnsNames.ora file is not currently located in the Oracle Client Home\Network\Admin directory. FDM looks to this directory in order to establish the connection with the Oracle Database, since the TNSNames.ora file is not in this location, it returns the database connection error.
does not exist and results in the error message returned.
Solution

A) Copy the TNSNames.ora file from the root of the C:\ drive on the FDM Application Server to the \Network\Admin directory on the FDM application server
B) Test the login to FDM.

A Restart of FoundationServices0 WL server is necessary to get the system working again.
Changes

The User who started EPM 11.1.2 has logged out or has been logged out by system
Cause

Caused by the definition of the Services.
OHS needs the user logged on to work properly.

In some cases the existence of IPv6 on the server also causes this.

Solution

This issue has been fixed in version 11.1.2.1.

As a workaround, you can do one of the following:

a. Disable IPv6
b. Do not log out the user
c. Manually change the service owner

Will FDM work on a machine where IIS 7.0 and HFM 11.1.2.1 are installed?

Solution

Performance Management Architect and Financial Management both require that a 64-bit Oracle Database client be installed. Strategic Finance and FDM both require that a 32-bit Oracle Database client be installed. Note that Strategic Finance only uses the Oracle OLEDB driver supplied in the Oracle Database client install.
Financial Management and FDM can coexist on Windows 2008 64-bit systems using IIS7; however, there is a required sequence for installing the Oracle Database clients to support this scenario. You must install the Oracle Database 32-bit client first, then install the Oracle Database 64-bit client. If you already have installed both Oracle Database clients and did not install Oracle Database 32-bit client first, then uninstall the 64-bit client and install it again.
- If you are using FDM or Performance Management Architect Dimension Server, Oracle Data Provider (ODP) for .NET 2.0 (from the Oracle Data Access Component (ODAC) package) is required and must be installed by a user with Windows administrator rights.

- In order to use Oracle RAC/SCAN, install OCI (Oracle Call Interface) as part of the Oracle database client installation.
- If your database resides on a remote computer, create a Net Service Name that enables the product to connect to the remote database.
- Use the global database server name when specifying locations and paths. Do not use localhost as a server name.

The path pointing to the Reporting and Analysis Framework web application instance is incorrectly being defined in the weblogic.xml file

This file should point to the below location:
\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1/ReportingAnalysis/RAFrameworkWebapp
Solution

- Stop the "Reporting and Analysis Framework web application" component,
- Navigate to \Middleware\EPMSystem11R1\products\biplus\InstallableApps,
- Take a backup of the file called raframework.ear,
- Extract this file in a temporary folder (e.g. using Winzip),
- Navigate to that temporary folder,
- Extract the file called raframework.war in a temporary folder (e.g. using Winzip),
- Navigate to that temporary folder,
- Navigate to the WEB-INF folder,
- Edit the file named weblogic.xml with a text editor,
- Locate the below paragraph:

C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1/ReportingAnalysis/RAFrameworkWebapp
/jsp/form/*
/media/mt/*
/media/mt_thumbnails/*

Does the tag point to something like "@oracleInstance@/ReportingAnalysis/RAFrameworkWebapp" instead of the real path?

If this is the case, please:

- Replace the value of the tag with the actual path to the folder.
The @oracleInstance@ should be replaced with the path to the EPM instance on the server where the "Reporting and Analysis Framework web application" component is located.
For your reference, the tag is pointing to the below location in my test EPM System 11.1.2.1 environment:
C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1/ReportingAnalysis/RAFrameworkWebapp
('\' or '/' characters do not matter at that point)

- Save and close the file,

- Re-build the raframework.war file so that it includes the modified version of the weblogic.xml file,

- Re-build the raframework.ear file so that it includes the modified version of the raframework.war file,
Please ensure that both the ear and the war files have their directory structure being built exactly the same way as before such files have been altered. Not following this recommendation would prevent the "Reporting and Analysis Framework web application" component from starting properly,

- Clear the Weblogic temporary location for the "Reporting and Analysis Framework web application" component.
The actual location to be cleared can be retrieved from the JVMOptionX defining the "-Dweblogic.j2ee.application.tmpDir" parameter accessible at the below Windows Regitry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hyperion Solutions\RaFramework0\HyS9RaFramework
For your reference, this temporary location points to the below location in my test EPM System 11.1.2.1 environment:
C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\EPMSystem\servers\RaFramework0\tmp

- Start the "Reporting and Analysis Framework web application" component.

- Clear the cache of the web browser,

- Lastly, please ensure that both locations contain the icon files (*.gif):
\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\ReportingAnalysis\RAFrameworkWebapp\media\mt
\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\ReportingAnalysis\RAFrameworkWebapp\media\mt_thumbnails

Note:
Using either the third party tool 7-zip of the Java tool jar.exe would ease the modification process of the ear/ear files.

Goal

You've installed Financial Reporting Print Service 11.1.2.1 but there are no stop or start scripts for it in the Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin folder. All other EPM services have scripts stored here.
Solution

Because the FR Print Server is now recommended to be installed on a separate machine from the rest of Financial Reporting, the stop and start scripts for Print Service were intentionally discontinued.

Per unpublished Bug 12431736, these scripts will return in 11.1.2.2.

List of Settings and Recommendations to Avoid Corruption

1. Backups - Please ensure that when Backups are run no user is in the application. This will ensure that you create a successful backup which can be used should there be the need.

2. Username - We do not recommend that users share user IDs. Every user should have their own ID which they use to log into Enterprise, also users should only log in once with their user ID.

3. Application changes while users logged into application - If the administrator is performing changes on the application (ie. security, adding accounts, deleting entities) no user should be logged into the application. Example: If users are entering data whilst the administrator deletes accounts the application may corrupt.

4. Anti-Virus - The Anti Virus Software should not be set to run in real time as this might lead to performance issues and may result in corruption in the worst scenario. We do recommend that you perform scheduled scan at the least busiest time. Ensure that the following files are not scanned: *.exa, *.lok, *.use, *.dat

5. Shutdown - We do recommend that all workstations and servers are shut down in the proper manner. This is to ensure that information is written back to the system. If user do not follow these procedures and "end task" out of Enterprise the application may corrupt.

6. Network - We do recommend that the network Enterprise runs on is stable and has enough bandwidth to ensure a constant high performance of Enterprise
Server - The Application Server should be a dedicated Enterprise Server to ensure constant performance. We do not recommend that this server is a PDC or BDC server or used for other purposes.

7. Space - Please ensure that the server and workstation have enough space to run Enterprise properly

Additionally the setting and changes in the Registry and Environment Changes Document should also be applied

Solution

Best practices for backing up an Hyperion Enterprise Application

Terminology

This article uses the term “Application Folder” (App Folder) to describe the Enterprise Database folder containing the Database files.
This is not the same as the “Software Folder” which contains the Executable code and associated DLL files etc.

Note : the App Folder may be a sub folder of the Software Folder, please be aware of this. The location of both these folders are user definable at install/app creation time.

The default Software Folder being C:\Progam files\Hyperion solutions\Hyperion Enterprise.

Application Name (APPNAME) this is the “name “ of a particular Enterprise Database created by the user..

To identify your Software Folder, search for the file Hypent.exe, your should only have one copy, resident in your Software Folder.

The App Folder contains the following files amongst other.

APPNAME.EXA
APPNAME.INI
APPNAME.lok
APPNAME.use

It also has sub folders:

\data
\reports
\inbox
\outbox

The App folder is again user definable but, the above sub folders are the default sub folder names.

The Application folder is defined by the APPPATH parameter in your Hypent.ini under each [APPNAME] section. You will find the hypent.ini in the citrix home folder or user profile folder.

Note the hypent.ini may contain several Application defined by the appropriate [APPNAME] sections.

Backing up the application

We do not recommend the use of software that will backup Enterprise files even if they are open. The common name for this process is "Open File Agent". The possibility for corrupting all or part of the database with files open during a backup process is too great.

Always back up your applications and data before and after you perform significant work on your applications. You should back up an application when
you perform the following operations:
Install software upgrades.
Implement new applications.
Application Maintainance.
Run rollovers.
Conduct closings.
Enter a large amount of data.
Develop a process for performing backups that is separate from network and corporate backup procedures. Network and corporate backup procedures might not consider your closing cycles and other aspects of your financial data.
You should schedule backups based on how much and how often your data changes.
You should be able to go back to any definitive point to evaluate your data. For example, if you conduct month-end closings, you should be able to access your month-end closing data from previous months or years.

Always ensure there are no users logged on to any Enterprise or Reporting module when the back-up starts.
Set a Back-Up Window (time) in which users know not to log on to the application while the back-up takes place.

An alternative that some clients use when there is no time when all users are out of the database would be to create an AutoPilot routine that extracts security, system, formulas, journals, and data for all categories daily or as often as needed. Then if you cannot get to a clean backup to restore an application, you have the means to rebuild the database. A further precaution would be to have two different routines that extract to different filenames. By running each on alternate days, you will be assured of good extracts no more than one or two days old. AutoPilot can also be used to build a new application.

Always back-up entire APP FOLDER never parts of APP FOLDER

Backup an Enterprise application using an AutoPilot taskflow

When creating the AutoPilot routine, the steps may look like this:

1. Change Application.
Change from a local dummy application to the production application.
Log into the application with an admin account.
2. Extract Security.
3. Extract an Enterprise Application.
4. Extract Logic.
5. Change Category.
6. Extract Enterprise data.
Use an entity list with all base entities.
Use an account list with all accounts.
Include Global.
7. Extract Journals.
Include all periods.
8. Change Category.
9. Extract Enterprise data.
10. Extract Journals.
11. Repeat steps 8-10 for all categories.
12. Copy reports from the Reports folder.
Use Execute File Management Commands and use the Copy function.
13. Change Application.
Change back to dummy application.

By changing from a local dummy application to the production app on the server, then back to it when done, any automated backup can still run without a user in the production application

Is it possible to create the application backup profile and the scheduling on a different server to where the application directory is located?

No, it is not possible to have the application backup profile and the scheduling on a different server to where the application files are located. It should be set up on the same server as the application directory.

Disconnect Citrix users from system before taking backups

We cannot recommend to use any kind of script to perform logout/disconnect before backup is taken.

We strongly advise NOT to use the 'kill' command to terminate Hyperion Enterprise sessions. This command has been known to cause issues with the software. It has resulted in clients having to reinstall software.

Below is a method that some clients are using to get users to logout before taking a backup:
1. Prevent new logons (could be done through Citrix Metaframe).
2. Prompt users to logout from the application several times (could be done through Citrix Metaframe).
3. If users still in the system, a reboot would be preferred instead of the 'kill' command as the Operating System takes care of the disconnection in a milder way than the 'kill' command.

Test in a test environment first. Make sure that the routine minimizes the risk of users doing any changes to the system, data loads, consolidations, etc. when the disconnection is performed.

Restoring the application

The entire database must be restored from the same backup tape.
We do not recommend partial restores under any circumstances. With a partial restore, there is a potential for internal signatures to no longer match causing data to be "lost".

Before restoring a back-up, ensure users are not logged in to any Enterprise module, Enterprise Reporting or any addons i.e Retrieve, Schedules, Dataextend.

When restoring you have the option to either overwrite the present app folder (suggest you clear it first). If you do overwrite the users will be able to connect to the restore with no changes needed.

If you restore to a new App Folder , the users will have to use the “Add Application” option at their logon screen to locate the restored folder and then add the restored application. When they do this, the reference to that particular application is overwritten with the new location within hypent.ini.

Note you can only have one instance of an APPNAME in your hypent.ini file at any one time.

When the users add an APPNAME that is already there, they get a message warning this will Overwrite the Application. It is only the link via the hypent.ini file that gets overwritten and not the Application itself.

Never restore partial applications. ALWAYS THE COMPLETE APP FOLDER.

If the software folder is damaged, run the install program again and select the REPAIR OPTION or run a complete re-install. If you restore a Software Folder form back-up you may run into file registration issues.

Virus Scanning

The APP FOLDER should not be scanned live scanned for viruses.

Exclude the APP FOLDERS form live virus scanning.

Run a full scan over the APP FOLDERS daily when users are not active.

The danger is that the virus scanning software locks a file while scanning, and Enterprise cannot then lock the file itself.

Make sure users do not store office documents in the APP FOLDER as these can harbor viruses and need to be live scanned.

Versions 6.5 and above

Enterprise version 6.5.x and 6,5,1.x include an internal back-up routine which does allow back-ups to be taken with active users.

This functionality was not available in earlier versions…

Incremental Backups

Incremental backups are not recommended for Hyperion Enterprise applications.
The recommended method is to make a backup of the entire application folder including all subfolders whilst all users are logged out of the application
If it is not possible to ensure all users are logged out an application before performing a backup, consider upgrading to Enterprise 6.5 or later where backups can occur whilst users are logged into the application.

Goal

Setting up Hyperion Retrieve with user specific or multiple HPAPP.DAT files in a Citrix Environment.
Solution

Setting up Hyperion Retrieve with user specific or multiple HPAPP.DAT files in a Citrix Winfram/Metaframe environment:

The admin must log in as the user and set up a user variable pointing to the path for the HPAPP.DAT to the users home directory. The admin must set this up for each user and have the copy of the specific HPAPP.DAT in the users home directory. If a system environment variable has already been set up for the HPAPP.DAT, it would need to be removed since it will take precedence over a user variable that is set up.

1. An HPAPP.DAT file with desired data application references needs to be created/copied for every user to his/her personal Metaframe home directory.

Home Directories contain any user specific files in the Metaframe environment. For Enterprise, these include the HYPENT.INI, REPENG.INI, etc...
Individual home directories for each user are the standard recommended configuration from Citrix.

2. Create a User Variable.
Go to -> Control Panel ->System ->Environment with the following attributes:
Variable: HPAPP.DAT
Value: drive\home directory path\HPAPP.DAT
For example, if the user home directories are all set up on the Z drive with each user folder named after the user's ID (this is another Citrix recommendation), then your User Variable would be "Z:\username\HPAPP.DAT"

It may also be necessary to leave the default file location in Excel blank.

NOTE: To verify that home directories have been set up properly and are referencing the correct home folder, A good test is to go to a DOS Command Prompt. This should show the current user's home folder as the active directory.
If this is not the case, verify the Home Directory and Terminal Server Home Directory for the user in User Manager for Domains
